Most of us drive a car and we will be very aware of how expensive they can be to run. They can take up a large proportion of our income making paying for other things such as rent, loan repayments or even food difficult, but there are things that you can do to keep the costs down. You may feel that you have tried most things, but it is worth having a look through the list and thinking about what you do and whether there are any changes that you can make.
Find cheaper insurance
Car insurance can be a really large part of our total car expenses. However, many people will stick to the same insurer and not think about looking to see if they are paying more than necessary. Although you do need to make sure you have the cover that you need, you should still compare prices each time your insurance is due for renewal to make sure that you are not paying more than necessary. You may find that you could save a significant amount if you change to a different insurer. If you pay monthly on a long-term basis, rather renewing yearly, make sure that you regular compare prices of different insurers to make sure that you are not paying more than necessary.
Car insurance is also often dearer if you pay it monthly. You normally need to pay it in a lump sum if you want to get it at a cheaper price. It can be best to save a bit each month so that you can afford to pay it in a lump sum when the renewal is due and then you will end up paying less.
Find cheaper fuel
Fuel is also something which costs a lot of money and it seems like it is always going up as well. It is wise to take a look and make sure that the place you are buying your fuel from is a good price. Sometimes it can be too easy to leave the fuel until it almost out and then go to the nearest petrol station. It is better to plan a bit more and fill up before you run out at a lower priced petrol station. Obviously, you will need to make sure you are not driving so far to get fuel that you are using up the money you have saved by burning fuel to get there.
Get cheaper services
Cars need servicing every so often and it can be tempting to just go to the dealer for this. However, if you go to an independent garage it is likely to be cheaper. The parts will be cheaper and the labour and so you can make significant savings this way. You may even be able to do some of the work yourself and save even more money. The same applies when you buy new tyres as going to a dealer will be expensive but you may be able to find independent businesses who will be able to provide you with cheaper tyres and a cheaper service which will save you money.
Drive efficiently and as little as possible
There are ways that you can drive efficiently which will help your fuel to go further. By not accelerating fast and driving at a consistent speed then you will lose less fuel. Also getting rid of unnecessary weight in your car can help you to need less fuel as well. It can be worth also thinking about whether driving is always necessary. It may be that you can walk somewhere instead and save the fuel. This may also save you money in car parking as well.
Buy a more efficient car
When you buy a new car it can be worth trying to get one that is efficient. This will mean that you will not spend so much in fuel. It can also be worth considering the cost of parts and whether they are easy to get hold of. If you need a repair, it will cost you less if the parts are cheaper and easier to find. Also consider that if you get a smaller car then it will be cheaper to insure. Certain models will also be cheaper to insure than others so it is worth finding out about this as well.
So, there are a lot of things that you might be able to do in order to make your car cheaper to run. It may even be worth thinking about whether you should reduce the amount of cars in your household. If you have two or three cars, then reducing them will make a significant difference. You will have less tax and insurance as well as reducing the costs of servicing, MOT and fuel. Even if you only have one car, it is possible that you will be able to try various things to save money.
